Project Overview
A Calgary Transit accessibility initiative, this project introduced tactile directional indicators (TDIs) across two major LRT platforms — SAIT/ACAD/Jubilee Station and Brentwood Station — to enhance navigation for blind and visually impaired riders. The City required a system capable of withstanding Calgary’s extreme weather conditions, from –45°C to +45°C, ensuring long-term durability through constant expansion and contraction cycles.
Vanguard ADA Systems was awarded the project, with TransCanada Vanguard engaged as their Canadian partner to assist in the successful completion and installation of the Vanguard GuideStrip™ system.
Tactile surface indicators create a distinct change in texture that can be felt underfoot or with a cane, providing essential cues for safe and independent travel. Raised bars signal caution, smoother surfaces guide the walking path, and right-angle turns assist with wayfinding — ensuring fully accessible and inclusive public transit environments.
