Project Overview
In 2026, accessibility improvements were completed at two heavily used Calgary Transit locations—Rundle LRT Station and Chinook LRT Station. Both stations experience significant daily pedestrian traffic, making clear and reliable tactile wayfinding essential for blind and visually impaired passengers.
As a Canadian installation subcontractor, TransCanada Vanguard assisted Vanguard ADA Systems (USA) in completing the installation of the Vanguard GuideStrip™️ system and detectable domes at both LRT stations.
GuideStrip™️ was installed as the primary tactile wayfinding product across the designated platform areas. Detectable domes were added at selected decision points and direction-change areas where additional tactile cues were required.
GuideStrip™️ creates a distinct raised directional surface that can be detected underfoot or with a mobility cane, helping passengers identify and follow accessible travel routes throughout the stations. The detectable domes provide additional tactile information at key locations, supporting safer and more independent navigation.
The system was selected to provide durable performance under heavy pedestrian use and Calgary’s demanding seasonal weather conditions. Installation work was carefully completed within active transit environments while minimizing disruption to passengers and regular station operations.
